FRENCH ISLAND CAMP

"On Tuesday 30th October we left at 15 minutes past 8 in the morning. We got onto the ferry to go to French Island. When we got to the bus on French Island we had lunch, then we picked our huts. We made up our sleeping bags before we went out to play down at the beach in French Island. On Wednesday we had beach exploring with Mrs. Dunn. We had mud racing to the edge of the mud and back. John T fell in to the mud. We had to jump off the edge of the pier to wash off the mud. Before going back to camp we went fishing, canoeing, camping, cooking and singing. In my hut was Seref, Chris.H, Angie M. and Chris, David and my brother too."

MOBILITY WALK

"Before the Mobility walk we had to collect rnoney for the Gulde Doqs Association. We had a long time to do it because on Tuesday it was Melbourne Cup Day and we didn't come to school. The school ralsed $1428. On Tuesday the 20th November we walked, before we left school we got maps and tags that had numbers of how many kilometres we would walk. Every k.m. there was a teacher that ticked one number. On the way we saw Miss Owen's grade. We went behind them and when we looked at the man we saw that we had missed a checkpoint so we had to walk one block back. When we got to the park we had a sausage with sauce and a hamburger with sauce. Then we had a drink. After lunch there were bananas and apples. Everyone had what they wanted. For a while we played. Then we cleaned up and left. On the way bacK we came by a short cut, because we thought it would rain. So the teachers let us go home." - Mary Vithoulka Grade 5D

COLLINS STREET WALK

Seven grade 5 children were involved in making a film called "Collins Street Walk". The film is to be screened on a glant screen in the City Square during the next year. The children - 5teven Garofalo, Chris Konstantinidis, Chris Haralambopoulos, Seref Cetin, Marina Sklebar, Chrisanthi Loumbiardis and Chrissy Sourdis, had to draw pictures and maps on a giant computer, which required a great deal of skill and concentration. The children worked out their own animated illustrations and script under the guldance of Paul Connor, a student of Media at Swlnburne Technical College. The film is based on interesting features of several old buildings and arcades at the western end of Collins Street.

"When we went to Collins Street we saw very old buildings and a couple of new ones. We saw the Block Arcade and above lt there was a big dome which supplies more light. Then we went to the Royal Arcade. It had two old statues which tell us the tlme The Mltre Tavern is a pub. It is covered sky scrapers. The trees down there are stlil growing well even if the sun isn't there. The C.B.A. Bank had gold all over the roof which could go all around the equator if it is stretched 1 inch wide. One of the oldest buildings is the Rlalto. Some people want it to rbeecome a Casino. Most of the building is wrecked." - Chris Konstant1nidis Grade 5C

"When our class watched the film it was good. All of them had a good part_ But mostly Steven and Sandy did the most talking. At the start they showed you where it started and finished. These are the people that did it Marina, Sandy, Chris H, Steven, Seref and Chrissy. It was a good film." - Sandra Bristow Grade 5D

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

The term began with House Sports. All upper school children jolned in the events. There was keen competition from each house and eventually Red House won. Then followed the district sports. George Street came second in these. Also during third term our school has been a part of the local cricket and softball competition. The. glrls won the softball flnals and the boys were runners up in the cricket. We are very pleased with the enthusasm the children put into the competitions and also the good sportsmanship that is displayed on most occasions. At present there are 100 grade 3 children participating in a swimming program each day at Fitzroy Baths. This swimming program has been running for three consecutive weeks.

Camps have also been a large event durlng third term. There have been 5 camps. Grade 3 spent 3 days at Monbulk, Grade 4, 4 days at Emerald, Grade 5, 4 days at French Island and Grade 6T 5 days at Dromana, Grade 6C 3 days at Toora. The camps have become an important part of school life at George Street each year more and more children are allowed to come along, and children look forward to the new experiences offered at camps.

For the 6th year running we held our Mobility Walk. Children after gathering sponsors we walked to Studley Park and back. The walk was successful and $1427.08 was raised. Out of thls money the school keeps half, so a cheque for $714.50 is being forwarded to the Guide Dogs for the Blind Assoclatlon. We appreciate the role the Mothers Club takes on this day. They take responsibillty for the barbecue lunch provided for the walkers.

This year towards the end of each term we have an activity to include parents. In May we had a barbeque on a Sunday. In August we had our folk dance night at Exhibition High School and last Frlday we had a barbeque and Christmas concert. These events have proved to be quite popular with both parents and chiidren and the teachers appreciate being able to meet parents on an informal basis. Each Monday morning during thlrd terms all upper school children nave spent half an hour folk dancing. The children have thoroughly enjoyed this activity and we thank Mrs. Whitchurch and Mr. Cherry for organising this weekly activity. This year the annual Christmas servlce at St. Marks Church was held wlth Cambridge Street 5chool.

As the year comes to a close we once again say goodbye to some staff. This year we have Mr. Sauvarin and Mrs Smedley leaving to take up part time study leave. Mr. Almao and Mrs.Conroy being given one year's leave of absence. Mrs. Boocock will also be leaving to go to a school nearer her Noble Park home. Mrs. Charles is going to Beechworth, Mrs. Oldfield to Norlane. Mrs. Moran who has been our school caretaker for 5 years is also leaving. She is retiring and will be living at Northcote. I am also retiring and would like to take this opportunity to thank parents for thelr interest and loyalty to the school over the years
