The transition from Kinder-Foundation and Grade 6-Grade 7 is an exciting and important time for all children.
Transitioning to Fitzroy Primary School
Fitzroy Primary School offers a comprehensive transition program for children and their families to ensure a smooth transition from Kindergarten to school. Our program aims to prepare children for the Foundation year and build strong and supportive partnerships with families.
We host informal Story Time afternoons each week starting in term 4. They are short sessions where children and parents are invited into the classrooms after school to listen to stories in both English and French. These sessions are designed to help familiarise the children with the learning environment and meet the teachers before the formal transition sessions begin.
Three one-hour transition sessions take place in November and December. During this time, children spend time in the classrooms with the Foundation teachers, Education Support Staff and our Year 5 and school leaders. Whilst experiencing their new classrooms, they participate in English and French activities, songs and stories that provide opportunities for social interaction with their new peers and help gain an understanding of school routines and expectations. Children also have the opportunity to meet their Art, STEM, Performing Arts and PE teachers.
Whilst children are in the classrooms with teachers, parents and carers participate in information sessions. Facilitated by our principal, assistant principal, teachers, wellbeing leader and School Community Liaison Officer, these are opportunities to meet other families whilst learning about Fitzroy Primary School.
Our Foundation teachers have fostered strong partnerships with local kindergartens. They collaborate throughout the year to help prepare children for school, and plan how to best support their transition to school and their learning, social and emotional needs.
Year 6-7 Transition
The year 6-7 transition program supports students and families with the next important step of your child’s educational journey. The program begins in term four with the year 6 students covering topics related to high school transition, routines at high school, how to follow timetables and the nature of high school learning.
Our year six students visit local high schools to familiarise themselves with the facilities and experience a range of programs on offer. Students and their families are supported throughout the decision-making process and graduate from Fitzroy PS equipped with the skills required to thrive in their new school. The transition program provides support for parents and carers when selecting a high school for their child. Grade six teachers have regular and ongoing communication with high school coordinators and support students who may need to go through an application process, including interview preparation. At the end of the year, all students spend a full day at their high school in preparation for the following year. We work closely with families and high schools to ensure a smooth transition to high school for our graduating students.
